Tata Communications and AWS Join Forces to Build India’s AI-Ready Network
Tata Communications, a global leader in communications technology, has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc., to develop an AI-ready network infrastructure in India. This strategic alliance is set to create a high-capacity, resilient long-distance network that will connect major AWS infrastructure hubs, supporting the rapid expansion of generative AI and cloud-based innovation across the country.
Representing one of Tata Communications’ largest network undertakings in India in terms of both bandwidth and scale, this collaboration will link AWS’s data center regions in Mumbai and Hyderabad, along with AWS Direct Connect and Edge Network infrastructure located in Chennai. The resulting national network will serve as a robust backbone designed to support high-performance AI and machine learning workloads across diverse industries and use cases in India.
This next-generation network aims to deliver high-bandwidth, low-latency connections vital for handling compute-heavy AI applications. AWS plans to implement its proprietary networking technologies over this infrastructure, ensuring elevated levels of security, availability, and performance between its Indian locations. The result will be a seamlessly connected environment optimized for data-intensive operations such as generative AI, 5G, and high-performance computing.
Tata Communications’ advanced network will offer express routing and ultra-low latency, facilitating faster data movement and accelerated processing speeds—key ingredients for deploying AI solutions at scale. This development stands to benefit a wide range of sectors in India, including finance, education, and healthcare, by enabling businesses to build, train, and operate sophisticated AI-powered tools with improved efficiency and reliability.
Tata Communications’ Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Genius Wong, stressed that this project is the company’s biggest National Long-Distance effort to date. She highlighted the significance of the collaboration in positioning both companies at the forefront of India’s AI transformation. Echoing this sentiment, AWS’s Jesse Dougherty expressed excitement about the partnership’s potential to empower Indian enterprises through enhanced cloud infrastructure, paving the way for scalable innovation and supporting the country’s expanding digital ecosystem.
