In August, Microsoft may release its new Surface Laptop 5G powered by Intel
Microsoft has officially unveiled a new 5G-enabled version of its Surface Laptop, set to begin shipping on August 26th, with a starting price of $1,799.99. This updated model, known as the Surface Laptop 5G, is powered by Intel’s latest Core Ultra Series 2 processors and includes an integrated NPU (neural processing unit) to enable access to Microsoft’s cutting-edge Copilot Plus AI capabilities.
While the Surface Laptop 5G retains the sleek design and 13.8-inch display of the existing Surface Laptop 7, it features a number of internal enhancements to support mobile connectivity. Microsoft has integrated a 5G modem and included both eSIM compatibility and a physical nano SIM slot on the side, offering users flexibility when it comes to staying connected on the move.
The entry-level Surface Laptop 5G configuration includes an Intel Core Ultra 5 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of SSD storage, all priced at $1,799. At the higher end, a premium model is available for $2,699, featuring an Intel Core Ultra 7 processor, 32GB of RAM, and a spacious 1TB of storage. All variants will be offered in Microsoft’s signature platinum silver finish, reinforcing the premium aesthetic.
According to Nancie Gaskill, general manager of Microsoft’s Surface division, the 5G version isn’t just a standard laptop with a modem. Instead, it features a purpose-built dynamic antenna system composed of six antennas that intelligently adjust based on how the device is being held or used. Microsoft also developed a custom multi-layered laminate material that allows radio signals to pass through efficiently while maintaining the device’s durability, lightweight construction, and high-end feel.
Microsoft tested this advanced 5G hardware across more than 100 mobile carriers in over 50 countries, ensuring global reliability. With built-in 5G, the laptop not only maintains constant connectivity but can also function as a mobile hotspot. Aimed primarily at enterprise customers, the Surface Laptop 5G launches alongside the new Surface Laptop 13-inch and Surface Pro 12-inch models available starting today.
