Enhanced Navigation & Discovery: Tripadvisor Debuts Next-Gen Maps with Mapbox
Leading location technology platform Mapbox announced that it has been incorporated into Tripadvisor’s recently revamped, traveler-first map experience on both mobile and online platforms. Tripadvisor, the biggest travel advice website in the world, helps millions of users in finding lodging, dining options, and things to do. Its new maps, powered by Mapbox SDKs and the Mapbox Standard 3D basemap, have already led to greater engagement and a measurable boost in bookings.
The updated design moves away from generic default basemaps that prioritize vehicle navigation and highways. Instead, Tripadvisor sought a partner that could provide greater customization and a map experience specifically designed for travelers. According to Sanjay Raman, Chief Product Officer at Tripadvisor, this collaboration allowed the company to craft a unique and highly tailored experience, offering flexibility and design control that better aligns with the needs of its global audience.
Built on the Mapbox Standard 3D basemap, the new maps bring landmarks and amenities to life through interactive 3D features, making orientation easier for travelers. The flexibility of Mapbox Standard allows Tripadvisor to shift emphasis away from less relevant details such as highways and instead highlight points of interest like shopping areas and tourist attractions. The platform’s ability to adjust color schemes ensures the maps are visually aligned with Tripadvisor’s brand identity.
Enhancements also extend to Tripadvisor’s map pins, which are no longer static icons. They now feature ratings, labels, and even Tripadvisor Traveler’s Choice Award insignias where applicable, providing users with immediate insights directly on the map. Cherie Wong, SVP of Location Services at Mapbox, highlighted the collaboration as proof that Mapbox Standard is more than a map style, but a foundation for engaging, immersive experiences.
The “Nearby” function on the Tripadvisor mobile app has also been redesigned to prioritize maps. Previously limited to a list view and static map, the new design now emphasizes visual discovery, resulting in a significant jump in engagement. By integrating Mapbox’s vast POI data, covering over 330 million global locations, the feature provides travelers with greater context and improved wayfinding.
The partnership was showcased during the keynote session at the BUILD with Mapbox conference on September 8, where leaders from both companies discussed how tailored map experiences are redefining travel planning. Raman emphasized that Mapbox’s technical expertise and collaborative approach made the rollout seamless and the vision achievable, encouraging other innovators to embrace creative approaches with Mapbox.
Headquartered in San Francisco, Mapbox powers billions of customizable location-based experiences globally, while Tripadvisor continues to serve as the go-to travel guidance platform with more than a billion reviews and contributions helping travelers worldwide.
